Shirin van Anrooij will sit out the 2024-25 cyclocross season and miss the early part of the upcoming road season after undergoing surgery to treat a narrowing in her external iliac artery, Lidl-Trek announced Monday.
The 22-year-old Dutch cyclist experienced unusual sensations in her left leg during the latter part of the road racing season, prompting medical evaluations that confirmed the artery issue, officials confirmed.
On October 31, Van Anrooij successfully underwent surgery to widen the artery and will now begin an extended rest period before resuming training.
The setback will keep Van Anrooij off the cyclocross circuit for the winter, and she is expected to return to road competition in May, team officials said.
“After some hard months on and off the bike, we finally got to the bottom of what was causing me problems in my left leg,” Van Anrooij said in a statement.
“I have had successful surgery to repair a narrowing of my external iliac artery. It was definitely a scary discovery at first, but everything went well, and I’m happy that I can now start my recovery.”
The cyclist said she expects it will take several months of recovery period before returning to competition.
“It will be around six months until I can properly think about racing again, so sadly, this will mean no CX for me in 2024-25. I’ll be watching and cheering for everyone all season,” she said.
Missing the mud and the muck
The recovery period means she will miss all of the cyclocross season and the spring classics as well.
“The support from my friends, family, team staff, and teammates has been incredible. It’s made this process a lot easier, so I want to thank everyone who has been with me every step of the way,” she said.

The Dutch rider, who turns 23 in February, did not win on the road this season, but delivered a string of high-profile results, including third at the Tour of Flanders.
She was second to Puck Pieterse in the youth category at the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.
She was a major force in the 22-23 cyclocross season, and won the U23 world title.
Last winner, she was a consistent performer across the circuit, winning the Trek Cup and sharing the podium with second to winning teammate Lucinda Brand at the Zilvermeercross.
