A moment of temper on the part of Eli Iserbyt saw the Belgian champion disqualified during the Exact Cross Beringen Saturday, with the Belgian champion later accepting blame for what happened.
He and Dutchman Ryan Kamp tangled on a muddy bend during the race, with both ending up on the ground. Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) scrambled to his feet and as he was getting going again, stamped on Kamp’s wheel.
The Alpecin-Deceuninck Development Team rider remonstrated with him but while Iserbyt continued on, he was later directed into the pits on lap six and disqualified from the race.
“I understand the decision of the jury to dsq me today in Beringen,” he later said on social media.
“My acts after the hard crash were made in a rage of anger and don’t belong in this sport. For this I want to apologise to everyone involved. Now I’ll focus on the positive things and look forward to the next races!”
Kamp was forced to change bikes in the pits after the incident and ultimately finished back in 22nd place.
The race was won by Lars van der Haar (Baloise Trek Lions), who beat Michael Vanthourenhout (Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal) by ten seconds.
World champion Fem van Empel (Visma-Lease a Bike) beat Ceylin Alvarado (Fenix-Deceuninck) in the women’s race.
Alvarado appeared to be the stronger of the two but crashed and her chain came off. It also dropped a second time, ending her chances.
