Cat Ferguson doubled up Thursday to win the junior road race in damp, soggy conditions to open road racing at the UCI road cycling world championships in Zürich.
The 18-year-old out-kicked Paula Ostiz of Spain in a three-up sprint to win the world title just days after bringing home gold in the individual time trial. Viktória Chladoňovä of Slovakia was third.
“It was a very tactical race and I made sure on the climbs I was always in a position to get in the moves,” Ferguson said. “I knew when the three of us got away on the final climb it would go all the way to the finish.”

Ferguson, who joins Movistar next season for her first full year in the WorldTour, dominated junior women’s road racing in Zürich. She also won time trial gold in barnstorming fashion on Tuesday this week.

After missing out last year on the title, Ferguson delivered on her pre-race favorite status.
“The road race is the one I’ve always wanted. It’s 100 percent my favorite discipline,” she said. “I was second at Glasgow and it really hurt. It’s so nice to wear the jersey now.”
Alyssa Sarkisov was the top American in 13th at 2:25, and Lidia Cusack was 30th in the next group at 5:27.
